Heating: Furnaces & Heat Pumps FAQs

My furnace lights, then shuts off. Why?

A dirty flame sensor is a frequent cause. Other possibilities include a venting or pressure switch issue, or an overheating limit from a clogged filter.

Gas furnace or heat pump in Central Texas?

Both work here. Which costs less to run depends on your gas and electric rates. Ask the contractor to compare using your actual rates rather than general claims.

Why is my heat pump steaming in winter?

That's usually the defrost cycle melting frost off the outdoor coil. Steam and a pause of the outdoor fan for a few minutes are normal.

Is a heat pump a good choice in Central Texas?

Mild winters suit heat pumps well, and they cool just like an AC. Compare operating costs with your actual gas and electric rates if you have gas.
